Lieutenant James Butler served in Samuel Cockburn's [SSNE 4219] troop in Swedish service which were sent to Russia during the 1614-16 campaign against Poland-Lithuania. He is probably the same as James Butler [SSNE 6450] who was captured and entered Polish service and headed a troop of 500 Scots at Moscow 1617-18Swedish Krigsarkiv, Muster Roll,1614/16; R. Frost, "Scottish soldiers, Poland-Lithuania and the Thirty Years' War" in S. Murdoch ed. Scotland and the Thirty Years' War, 1618-1648 (Brill, 2001), p.199.
