James Abercrombie served as first lieutenant in David Drummond's regiment from Kalmar in 1627, then as a captain in the Jonkoping regiment in 1629. It appears he served in Russia under Alexander Leslie of Auchintoul. Abercrombie went to Britain to hire men for Tsar's service and on 14/3/1632 he was present at the muster in Moscow. He served at the siege of Smolensk and in November 1636 he petitioned to leave MuscovySwedish Krigsarkiv, Muster Roll, 1627/12; 1629/23; F.
