John Carmichael was the eldest son of Sir John Carmichael. He is listed as an envoy to Denmark in 1589 where he served as a member of the embassy that was to negotiate James VI's marriage to Anne, spent the winter in Denmark 1589-90. He subsequently travelled as an envoy to England in 1590. He married twice, first to Elizabeth, daughter of the fifth Lord of Somerville, secondly to Margaret, daughter of Sir George Douglas of Pittenbeich. He also served as Privy Councillor and a Warden of the West Marches 1588-92 and 1598-1600. He was dead by 1600
