James VI was first made aware of Niels Krag in a letter of 27 August 1589 where he is called by Christian "Nicolaum Cragium Doctorem". He was to one of several Danes selected to conduct Princess Anna to Scotland for her wedding scheduled to take place in Scotland, pre James' jaunt to Norway. In the footnote to the letter from Christian IV we are told that he was, in 1589, a professor of history at [Copenhagen] University, and that he died in 1602. The only other mention of him in the collection of Christian's letters is as an envoy to England in 1598. His mission is mentioned in the text though he is not by name.
