Comment:: While Augustine's De peccatorum meritis et remissione et de baptismo pauulorum was a key precedent for this medieval doctrine, Aelfric may well have encountered the idea through an intermediary: De peccatorum meritis does not appear in Paul the Deacon, and one manuscript from Anglo-Saxon England is extant.
