The text as we have it is a compilation. The asessement by Clemoes (1974) remains largely accepted, namely that the translation of Gn 1-3, 5.31b, 6-9, and 12-22, of Nm 13-31, and of Ios and Idc derive from the work of Aelfric of Eynsham. The whole of Aelfric's version of Gn 1-24.22 survives in a (very poor) copy in a Cambridge manuscript. Clemoes in fact doubted that the last four words of Nm 13.4 and all of 13.5-17 were Aelfric's work, or Ios 1.1-10 and Ios 12; Marsden (2000) finds the case unproven, except perhaps for Ios 12. The rest of the Heptateuch compilation has traditionally be assigned to a single 'anonymous translator', who may also have been the compiler, but Marsden (2000) has shown, mainly from the evidence of stylistic variation between different parts of the anonymous translation, that at least two translators must have been involved, and perhaps more. The source for the translation is the Vulgate, in two or more different exemplars, to judge from the variant readings used by the translators. There are a few Old Latin contaminations, some probably already in the exemplar(s), others derived from patristic or liturgical sources known to the translators.
In Gn 1.4, 'þæt leoht fram ðam ðystrum' translates Vulgate variant 'lucem a tenebris', not 'lucem ac tenebras'; conversely, in 1.18, 'leoht and ðystro' translates Vulgate variant 'lucem ac tenebras', not 'lucem a tenebris'. In 1.26, 'and ofer ealle gesceafta' translates Vulgate variant 'uniuersaeque creaturae', not 'uniuersaeque terrae'.

Cf. Vulgate 'egrediebatur et reuertebatur' (Gn 8.7). The OE translates a version with negation of the second verb. This is a variant of Septuagint origin which is in many Vulgate manuscripts. It is erroneous but was adopted almost universally by the fathers, especially Augustine, so that Aelfric may have chosen it whatever version his exemplar carried. Jerome drew attention to the problem in the Liber quaestionum hebraicarum in Genesim (CCSL 72, p. 10).

In v. 25, OE 'alyfe me to farenne and to geseonne' for Vulgate 'transibo igitur et uidebo' must originate in an exemplar with a textual modification, or annotation, similar to the marginal gloss found in one Theodulfian manuscript: 'transeam obsecro et uideam'. There it is prefixed by 'h' for 'hebraeus' and is one of some two thousand marginal scholia which accompany the Old Testament books in the manuscript and which give alternative readings from the Hebrew Bible. The scholion does indeed accurately render the sense of the Hebrew in v. 25: 'let me go over now that I may see the good land'.

Apart from the opening verse and the last two, the chapter is largely summarized (sometimes very briefly) or paraphrased. In 4.21, in the account of Jabel's killing of Sisara, the OE 'and he ætforan hire spearnlode mid fotum' for Vulgate 'qui soporem morti consocians defecit' indicates the possible influence of an Old Latin source (derived from a Greek version), such as that found in a few tenth- to twelfth-century Spanish bibles: 'ipse uero scarizans mortuus est sub pedibus eius.' Presumably Aelfric would have met this in a patristic source, though none has yet been traced. See Marsden 1994, 248-9.
