Comment:: This exemplum also appears in three lives of Gregory the Great (the anonymous Whitby life, John the Deacon, interpolated Paul the Deacon), and, with the preceding one, in a collection of eucharistic passages, apparently made by Paschasius, called the Exaggeratio Plurimorum Auctorum ..., and thence in later treatises on the subject. Aelfric could have found the exemplum in almost any of these contexts.
