Comment:: Apart from the opening verse and the last two, the chapter is largely summarized (sometimes very briefly) or paraphrased. In 4.21, in the account of Jabel's killing of Sisara, the OE 'and he ætforan hire spearnlode mid fotum' for Vulgate 'qui soporem morti consocians defecit' indicates the possible influence of an Old Latin source (derived from a Greek version), such as that found in a few tenth- to twelfth-century Spanish bibles: 'ipse uero scarizans mortuus est sub pedibus eius.' Presumably Aelfric would have met this in a patristic source, though none has yet been traced. See Marsden 1994, 248-9.

Comment:: Mostly summary or paraphrase; v. 25 is greatly amplified. The final chapters of Judges (17-21) are omitted entirely but there follows a long homiletic passage which includes an interpretation of Samson as a type of Christ. Similarities between the wording of this passage and a metrical passage in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle for 959, on the reign of Edgar, almost certainly suggest the influence of the former on the latter, not the other way round, as some scholars have believed (see Whitelock 1942, 38).
