Comment:: If, pace Biggs and Hall and earlier commentators, one translates the passage ‘When the Egyptians saw that, they marshalled their magicians Jamnes and Mambres and trusted that by means of their magic they would be able to pass by the same route’, the Passio may provide a closer source than hitherto suggested.
