Birth/childhood

Born 14.9.1769 at Berlin [Germany] son of Alexander Georg von Humboldt, chamberlain to the King of Prussia and Maria Elisabeth Colomb Holwede.

Career

Studied Frankfort on the Oder, Berlin, Gottingen and Freiburg.

Worked in mining before devoting himself to natural history and exploration. [Miner]

His Cosmos (1845-1858) is one of the greatest scientific works ever published. His Voyages… appeared in 30 vols (1807-1817).
