Born 28.4.1742 4th and youngest son of Robert Dundas of Arniston and Anne Gordon.
Studied Edinburgh University.
Advocate 1763. Advocate depute. Solicitor general 1766. Lord advocate 1775. M.P. for Edinburghshire 1774-1790 except for a few months. Home secretary 1791. Became Viscount Melville and Baron Dunira in 1802. Impeached in 1806, but acquitted. LL.D Edinburgh 1789. Rector, Glasgow University 1781-1783. [Lawyer, politician]
Died 27.5.1811 in Edinburgh - suddenly at his nephew’s house.
