Born Crieff March 1735.

Attended Crieff Grammar School.

Career

Apprenticed to George Dennistoun, Falkirk.

Studied Edinburgh and London.

L.R.C.P.E. 1.2.1780. F.R.C.P.E. 2.5.1780.

F.R.S.E. 1783. F.R.S.L. 1778.

Surgeon on a whaler and other ships. Assistant surgeon H.M. hospital, Antigua August 1762 - March 1763. Settled on Jamaica. Took a keen interest in botany and corresponded with Sir Joseph Banks and Jonathan Stokes. Sailed back and forth several times. Physician General Jamaica 1784, but his health failed. [Doctor]

Settled in Edinburgh. Publications.

Death

Died in Edinburgh 19.9.1819.
