Studied at Edinburgh University - arts student 1849-1854, divinity student 1857-1858, D.D. 1874 and Heidelberg University.

Licensed by Dumbarton presbytery 1858.

Spent some time in Canada.

Minister Roseneath 1860-1896. Professor of Church History, Glasgow University 1886-1898. Principal of Glasgow University 1898 - 13.1.1907 (died). [University professor]
