Born 1741 son of Alexander Russell, farmer, Windydoors, Selkirkshire and Christian Ballantyne.

Career

Started as a journeyman printer, but turned to literary work under the patronage of Lord Elibank. Self educated, pursued his career as a literary man and historian in London.

Death

Died 25.12.1793.
