Studied at Glasgow University - matriculated 1851, LL.D. 1886, and Edinburgh University - M.D. 1861.

Assistant curator, Hunterian Museum, London 1862-1867. Curator, Museum of the Royal college of Surgeons, Edinburgh 1869 and lecturer there 1873-1875.

Married Elsie Gray or Peters or McMordie daughter of Sir W. Gray of Greatham, Durham who survived him and married Professor Musgrove and she also survived him.
