Born c. 1819 son of John Paterson, merchant, Blantyre and Euphemia Walker.

Career

Studied Glasgow University - matriculated 1846.

Teacher, Madras College, St Andrews. Built and was head master of Clifton Bank school, St Andrews.

Provost of St Andrews 1881-1887.

[The above is to be distinguished from another contemporary John Paterson with St Andrews connections - John Paterson born c.1837 son of James Paterson, carpet weaver, St Ninians and Isabella Ewing.

Iron master Harrington, Cumberland until c.1873 when he retired to Kinburn House, St Andrews.

Provost of St Andrews 1887 - 93. Engaged in much litigation.

Died at Kinburn House 9.11.1898 aged 61.
