Born 16.9.1816 and baptised 13.1.1817 son of James Martin, solicitor, Edinburgh and Mary Reid. [Lawyer]

Career

Studied Edinburgh University - LL.D. 1875.

Rector of the University of St Andrews 1880 - 1883. [St Andrews University]

Practised as a lawyer in Edinburgh until 1846 then in London until his death [1846-18.8.1909]. Man of letters.

K.C.B. [Knight Commander of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath]. Married Helen Faucit.
