Studied Edinburgh University.
Emigrated to Canada then Victoria. Town clerk Warrnambool 1866-1867. Editor Warrnambool Examiner 1867-1872. Editor Warrambool Standard 1872-1881. Lecturer in Logic, Melbourne University 1881-1886. Professor of Mental and Moral Philosophy, Melbourne University 1886-1911 (resigned). [University lecturer, university professor, philosopher]
