(Professor of Natural History, Edinburgh University for three weeks in 1882).

Professor of Comparative Anatomy, Oxford University 1891-1898. Director, British Museum (Natural History) 1898-1907. K.C.B. [Knight Commander of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath] 1907.
