Career

Served a 5 year apprenticeship to his father, Samuel Laird, surgeon and apothecary, Magherafelt, Ireland. Attended lectures of Dr William Hunter and Dr Fordyce. Was for two years a dressing pupil under Mr Thomson, surgeon at the London hospital. Surgeon Canton 1763-1769. Surgeon H.E.I.C.S. [Honourable East India Company's Service] Bengal 1769. Surgeon major 1782. Head surgeon 1786. On furlough 1788. Appointed M.M.B. [Member of Medical Board] and President 1791. Retired 1802. [Doctor, apothecary, soldier]
