Apprenticed 1775 to Robert Wood, physician, Perth.

Studied Edinburgh University - medical student 1778-1779, 1780-1782, 1783-1784.

Said to have served four years as an assistant surgeon in the Army, but not in W. Johnston, Roll of Commissioned Officers in the Medical Service of the British Army 1727-1898 (Aberdeen, 1917). [Doctor]

Possibly the same man who was M.R.C.S. 1785, M.D. Marischal College, Aberdeen 1785 and in the East India Company’s Service, [Honourable East India Company's Service] but not in D.G. Crawford, Roll of the Indian Medical Service, 1615-1930 (London, 1930). [Soldier]
