Born 1.7.1829 son of Samuel Furnell, Dublin and Maria [ ].

Career

M.R.C.S.Eng. 18.7.1851 when he was from Pelham Pl., North Brompton.

Assistant surgeon Indian Medical Service Madras [now Chennai, India] 1855. Surgeon General 1885. Retired 1886. [Doctor]

Discovered chloroform as an anaesthetic in 1847, but did not pursue or publish, although he gave some to Holmes Coote, who actually used it in surgical operations. Principal Madras Medical College 1875-1880. C.I.E. [Companion of the Most Eminent Order of the Indian Empire] 1886.
