Birth/childhood

Born 13.2.1824 2nd son of Thomas Fitch, Colchester afterwards clerk, London and Sarah Tucker Hodges.

Career

Educated privately then became pupil teacher Borough Road School, Southwark 1838. Headmaster Kingsland Road School, Dalston 1844. Studied externally London University - B.A. 1850, M.A. 1852. Moved to Borough Road Training College in 1852 and became Principal in 1856. [Teacher]

H.M. Inspector of schools and training colleges from 1863

Highly regarded for reports on elementary education and endowed schools. Also a pioneer of women’s education.

Knighted 1896.
