Educated at Edinburgh, Paris and Oxford Universities [Edinburgh University, Paris University, Oxford University].

Assistant to Lewis Campbell at St Andrews 1887 - 1888. Assistant master, Harrow, 1888. Fellow of Merton College 1889. Interim professor of humanity, Edinburgh 1890. Substituted for Lewis Campbell from January 1898. [Teacher]
