Educated at Glenalmond and Oxford University.

Succeeded to title, [9th Earl of Elgin] 1863. Viceroy of India 1894 - 1899.

Lord lieutenant and Convenor of Fife.

Death

Died Broomhall, Dunfermline 18.1.1917.
