Building in progress

The Hatfield print shows the building in progress. The middle section of the print in which the work is concentrated is the Basilica.

You can see one of the front walls taking shape. Derricks are in place. In the bottom right-hand corner, oxen pull a cart with stone from the quarry. The buildings around the site will be the workshops. There will also have been kilns for slake-lime, pits for gypsum. Among other reasons for choosing this site was the availability of good quality granite, abundant wood, lime.
