Felipe de la Garza

Lifespan: (? – 3 July 1832)
Place of birth: Soto la Marina

Biography

Felipe de la Garza was born in Soto la Marina (Tamaulipas), where he grew up and spent his youth. Towards the end of the War of Independence he was made Governor of the province of Nuevo Santander (7 July 1821-26 September 1822), becoming, by default, the first governor of the state of Tamaulipas.

On 26 November 1822 he led an unsuccessful pronunciamiento against Agustín de Iturbide's government, demanding the reinstatement of the closed-down Congress and the release of the deputies that had been arrested in the summer of 1822. However, De la Garza is famous for apprehending Agustín de Iturbide when the former Emperor disembarked on the beaches of Soto la Marina in July 1824, on return from exile, and for carrying out the death sentence on the emperor which was decreed by the Constituent Congress of Tamaulipas.

De la Garza died on 3 July 1832, aged thirty-four.
