José María Carrasco

Biography

José María Carrasco (1813 -1851) was a soldier who was made lieutenant in 1833. He joined Mariano Arista’s forces and rose up in Huejotzcingo in June 1833 to proclaim the dictatorship of Santa Anna. He fought against the North Americans leading the second regiment in Palo Alto, Resaca de Guerrero and Monterrey where he was defeated. In 1851 he was sent to Sonora in charge of the fourth border battalion and as commander general of the State. Carrasco invaded the town of Janos in Chihuahua, under the pretext of offering protection from the Apache Indians. He died at the ranch of Conchori, in the municipality of Guyamas, Sonora.
